Strategic Objective Review

Issue
Executives require visibility of how current activity is aligned with strategic objectives to ensure that change is being delivered efficiently (e.g. avoiding duplication of effort and/or double counting of benefits).

When projects are initiated they are usually approved on the basis of their contribution to the strategic objectives of the organisation. However, things change in flight and the original intentions are subject to change. Executive decision making needs to be based on the most recent view of likely outcomes. 

This Service will review what systems and procedures are in place within the organisation to ensure that current and planned programmes and projects continue to be aligned with changing strategic needs.

Audience
The Chief Operations Officer (COO) of a large organisation who is responsible for delivering the benefits of initiatives through successful organisational change.

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of a large organisation who is responsible for authorising and monitoring the financial case for any investment.

Any other Senior Officer

Approach
The service will consist of three main stages information gathering, application of MSP principles with interim report, and final report and recommendations.

Information Gathering The scope of the engagement will be agreed as the first activity and this will quickly be followed by a number of interviews and observations to collect information about what is currently in place. Information will be gathered about the process for defining and setting up a programme or project, the governance processes in place while the programme or project is running, any financial and other reporting requirements and the processes for measuring, monitoring and closing initiatives.

Application of MSP Principles Once the current structures and procedures are understood the Consultant will apply guidelines as laid out in MSP to the Client’s PMO and will identify areas for implementation or improvement.

The Consultant will prepare an interim report during this phase in order to confirm the data gathered and any assumptions made. Further information gathering will take place at this stage if needed.

Final Report and Recommendations A recommendations document will be produced and will be presented to the Client.
